Schafer has been a very successful prime contract manager of large multi-company teams over the past ten years. The principal reason for this success is a philosophy we call Team Schafer. In a nutshell, the Team Schafer philosophy simply means being a good teammate with our corporate partners. "Good" in this instance means giving every teammate an equal chance to staff every position that becomes available on a contract. Many companies talk about taking this 'best athlete' approach to staffing but Schafer backs this up with a solid management process. Each Schafer Operational Manager is graded on how well he treats his subcontractors and how many subcontractors continue to work with us on new contracts. Most importantly the managers are incentivized to their treat their teammates as full partners. We call this staffing approach 'co-opetition,' or cooperative-competition. This means that the entire team competes for all staffing requirements and then cooperates to make the staffing action successful.
The real winners from this approach are our customers. They can be assured that they will receive the best possible candidate for the job without regard to corporate self-interest. We have used this approach on numerous contracts over the past decade with outstanding results. For example our US Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) customer has graded us as Exceptional (the highest possible rating) on every Contractor Performance Assessment Rating (CPAR) we have received over the life of our Space Control contract with AFSPC.
