Schafer Laboratories

Schafer Laboratories

Schafer Livermore Laboratory (SLL) located in Livermore, California has expertise in the areas of nano-engineered materials, films and coatings, precision machining, micro-assembly, and characterization. Materials and assemblies produced in our laboratories have applications in the areas of weapon and fusion energy research, fuel cells, batteries, insulators, solar energy, and electronics.

SLL operates class 100,000 clean room laboratories devoted to materials synthesis, physical vapor deposition, diamond turning, and metrology. Specialized class 100 workspaces are devoted to precision assembly and thin polymer film fabrication. We also have a conventional machine shop. In addition to our main laboratory, we have development, assembly, and characterization teams on-site at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

SLL provides technical support to the Inertial Confinement Fusion Community (ICF). We fabricate targets and target components for the National Ignition Campaign (NIC) and the High Energy Density Sciences (HEDS) programs. These targets are used by laser and accelerator facilities at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), and the National Laboratories. We specialize in providing responsive technical development on a short time scale.
