Dear Phil,
On September 30, 1998, the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence and the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization officially ended the mission of the STRV 1a and 1b satellites after more than four years of operation in a harsh space radiation environment. The data obtained from the experiments on these satellites have measurably increased our understanding of the space environment and its effect on vital systems and components. I believe this program has made an important contribution to our mission as well as that of our allied partners.
I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the technical and administrative support you provided throughout the initiation, definition, and execution phases of this program. The continuing outstanding support that you have provided to this program as well as the other projects sponsored by our Materials, Structures, and Power program has been a crucial factor in the success they have achieved.
Sincerely,
Lester L. Lyles
Lieutenant General, USAF
