Colonel Deeter,
Until recently, I was the program manager for a number of projects being
performed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) directed at
helping the DoD achieve common look and feel across command and control
and weapons systems. While I have recently left PNNL to take a position with
another company, there are some residual actions that I want to complete. One of these is to commend the THAAD Program Office for their support to one of the projects that I managed, the development of the Army Weapon System HCI Style Guide (WSHCI).
The Army's Director for Information Systems for Command, Control,
Communications, and Computers (DISC4) sponsored this project. The
project resulted in the publication of Version 1 of the WSHCI in 1996 and Version
2 in 1997. The WSHCI has been a very well received document and is cited
in the Joint Technical Architecture - Army (JTA-A). One of the factors that
contributed to the success of the document was a working group composed
of representatives of the various Army weapon systems sub-domains (ground,
aviation, missile, and soldier-systems). This working group provided
subject matter expertise as well as suggestions for content.
Dick Steinberg of the Schafer Corporation, one of PM THAAD's contractors,
represented the missile sub-domain. Dick, in this role, provided
invaluable services to the authors through his active participation in
all the working group meetings and suggestions on the technical content of
the document. He also worked to ensure that the interests of PM THAAD and
the missile sub-domain were represented in the document. He was a pleasure
to work with and reflected very well on the THAAD program, as did the
Schafer Corporation who provided other support. When the next version of the
WSHCI is developed, possibly in FY99, I am sure that his involvement will be
sought out.
As an aside, Dick also provided excellent suggestions and missile domain
related insights on another project that I was managing, the development
of a common look and feel for the Army Battlefield Command System (ABCS) for PM ATCCS. I have been very impressed with the professionalism and commitment to excellence of Dick and the Schafer Corporation, and through them PM THAAD. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me.
Best Regards
