Diana,
The Dynamic Hohlraum shot that was taken on Friday, August 7, 1998 for
Mark Derzon was another record shot on the Z machine. The target was a
bare TPX foam cylinder 8-mm diameter x 10-mm tall with a density of about
15 mg/cc.
The shot was 12 TW and the hohlraum temperature went to 250 eV! :-)
Attached is a digital image of the foam mounted to the castle piece of
the wire array hardware. The image is not very good, the foam was not
smaller in the center than the ends, it was perfectly straight; it is
often impossible to get top quality images on short notice. We assembled
this target with just enough time to get a couple of quick images and
then had to get it delivered to the wire array laboratory.
Congratulations to you and your staff. This foam target was typical of
the cylinders you have been providing Sandia for the Z machine shots, and
these results could not have happened without this excellent quality foam
target.
